Essex County Warrant Records Essex County Warrant Records

This page explains what we can help with and where official Essex County warrant questions belong. Nearly every one of those questions goes to a court clerk or to the sheriff's civil process division rather than to us. The routing below sends each kind of request to the office that actually holds the record.

This Is Not a Government or Law Enforcement Office. We run a private reference site. We cannot confirm whether a warrant exists, recall or clear a warrant, post bail, arrange a surrender, or give legal advice for anyone. For any of those, reach the issuing court clerk or the county sheriff's civil process division directly.

Need Official Warrant Information?

Here is where the most common Essex County requests belong:

  • Whether a warrant exists: the clerk of the court that issued it, or the local police department that made the case; the statewide warrant system is internal and has no public search
  • A bench or default warrant after a missed date: the District Court that set the case, since that court issued the warrant and keeps the file
  • Clearing or recalling a warrant: a licensed Massachusetts attorney and the issuing court, through a motion, a payment, or an appearance
  • A civil capias or other civil process: the Essex County Sheriff's Department civil process division, which serves civil orders and does not confirm criminal warrants

The courthouse most people in the county end up calling is the Essex County Superior Court clerk's office at 56 Federal St., Salem, MA 01970, 978-744-5500, Essex.clerksoffice@jud.state.ma.us. Salem District Court shares that building and answers at 978-744-1167 for its own dockets. For civil papers only, the sheriff's civil process office sits at 35 Congress St., Suite 2100A, Salem, MA 01970 and answers at 978-750-1900 ext. 3590 or civilprocess@essexsheriffma.org. The sheriff's headquarters is at 20 Manning Ave., Middleton, MA 01949.
